HAMBURG HOTELS
At almost every corner you will find hotels or B&Bs in Hamburg but not every neighborhood is as inviting as the other. Instead of staying in the city center that is usually very quiet and boring after business hours I would suggest the surrounding neighborhoods. The university quarter, the art nouveau quarter Eppendorf or Eimsbüttel, hip areas like Ottensen or the Schanzenviertel offer a great variety of bars, restaurants, shops, etc. A further alternative is the harbor side. Within the new harbor city and the Portuguese square you can expect a busy but cozy nightlife plus great views over the Elbe riverbanks.

If you plan to stay longer than just a couple of days and want to save some money I recommend a vacation rental. A great source for US residents is www.live-like-a-german.com. This provider is experienced in booking apartments and homes in Germany assuring a hassle-free payment for their clients.

Choosing an accommodation close to a metro station has the advantage that you are reaching most sights and neighborhoods within 15 minutes. The following hotels are selected because of their location, good service, and proximity to a metro station.

Hotels in Hamburg - Eppendorf

Eppendorf is one of the art nouveau quarters in Hamburg and known for small and cozy bars and restaurants. Many of them have quaint backyards or at least some tables in front of the venue where you can spend long and warm summer evenings blending into the local crowd.
Eppendorf is also known for its bi-weekly farmer’s market along Isestrasse underneath the subway bridge between Eppendorfer Baum and Hoheluftbrücke where you can buy fruits, cheeses, meat, fish, flowers, and arts and crafts.

Metro stations: Eppendorfer Baum or Hoheluftbrücke (subway U3), Klosterstern (subway U1)

The Ivy House, Klosterallee 70, Hamburg
http://www.vondeska-townhouses.de
From EUR 110 per night. Lovely decorated apartments within the beautiful art nouveau neighborhood. The rate comes without breakfast but a café is located next door and every Tue and Fri there is a farmers market along Isestrasse. This B&B is a real gem and very popular. If they run out of vacancy try their partner house the White House, which is around the corner. Metro station: Eppendorfer Baum or Hoheluftbrücke (U3).

Bed and breakfast to be, Klosterallee 67, Hamburg
http://www.bedandbreakfasttobe.de/
From EUR 85, no breakfast. Small B&B in an art nouveau building located next to a small Lake Alster canal. This building is just around the corner from many bars and restaurants along the quarters’ main artery Eppendorfer Baum and close to Lake Alster. Metro station: Eppendorfer Baum or Hoheluftbrücke (U3).

Hotels in Hamburg - Eimsbüttel/Schanzenviertel

Eimsbüttel
Similar to Eppendorf this neighborhood is full of art nouveau buildings and known for nice eateries, bars, small shops and tiny grocery stores. The only thing important is to stay close to a metro station since busses, which can take some time to shuttle you, serve most areas in Eimsbüttel.

Metro stations: U2 Christuskirche or Emilienstrasse or Osterstrasse

Schanzenviertel
The Schanzenviertel had a bad reputation in Hamburg in the past since it was known as a skid row and for autonomic movements and riots. Still you should avoid the area around May 1st, Labor Day in Germany. This day is known for demonstrations that take place in the quarter and usually end in fights with the police. However, the quarter changed incredibly and small boutiques, shops, many bars, and restaurants are scattered throughout the neighborhood giving the Schanzenviertel a cosmopolitan atmosphere similar to Brooklyn.

Restaurants, shopping, and bars are in walking distance. The rate comes without breakfast but free parking and Internet. Metro station: Christuskirche (U2).

Hotels in Hamburg - Altona

In the past this neighborhood was quite shabby but turned into a hip trend quarter of the years. It is known for its diversity and one of the Turkish and Arabic hubs in the city with a big variety of Mediterranean and Arabic snack shacks and restaurants. There are only a few good hotels around that I can recommend since most of them are located around the busy train and subway station Altona. The listed choices are off to the Northwest or South.

Metro station: Altona (S1, S21, S3, S11, S31), Bahrenfeld (S1, S11).

Clipper Elb-Lodge, Carsten-Rehder-Strasse 71, Hamburg
http://www.clipper-boardinghouses.de/de/haeuser/hamburg/holzhafen/
From EUR 103 ($135) per night. The hotel is located at river Elbe within walking distance to Ottensen’s main artery Ottenser Hauptstrasse, Bahrenfelder Strasse, and Alma-Wartenberg Platz (square). The hotel rooms are more like an apartment and come with a small kitchen and many rooms with a beautiful view over the harbor. Metro station: Königsstrasse (S1, S21, S3).

http://www.gastwerk.com/english/
From EUR 130 – 400 ($ 170 – 530) per night. Along the northwestern boarder of Altona lies the Gastwerk, a very modern and sleek design hotel. The hotel is located within a former red brick gas plant and is in walking distance to the main arteries of Altona. Besides the hotel a new quarter developed on the old gas plant property with restaurants, shops, and grocery stores. The hotel offers bike rentals and breakfast for an extra fee. Internet is included. Metro station: Bahrenfeld (S1 and S11).
25 hours Hotel, Paul-Dessau-Strasse 2, Hamburg
http://www.25hours-hotels.com/no1/
From EUR 95 ($125) per night. Modern retro style hotel that offers special discounts for people under 25. They distinguish their prices between the square footage of the rooms that come in the sizes M, L, XL, and XL family. The hotel offers bike rentals and breakfast for an extra fee. Internet is included. Metro station: Bahrenfeld (S1 and S11).

Hotels in Hamburg - City Center

During day the city center is a busy hub that changes in a quiet neighborhood after business hours. Although there are many restaurants and bars around most locals spend the evening in adjoining quarters. I more or less recommend a hotel in the city center only if you combine your visit with a business trip. Otherwise try to stay in walking distance to the charming art nouveau neighborhoods or the harbor area.

Metro station: Hauptbahnhof (all trains), Jungfernstieg (U1, U2, S1, S21, S3).

Around the canal you find restaurants and bars and the inner city center, Lake Alster, and the harbor are in walking distance. Metro station: Rödingsmarkt (U3) and Stadthausbrücke (S1, S21, S3).

Hotels in Hamburg - Harbor area

With the development of the harbor city and the southern boarders of Altona the area has becomes more and more attractive. As alternative to the famous but shabby red light district in St. Pauli, guests now have a huge selection of great eateries, nice and classy bars, and lounges to go to along river Elbe. Most hotels are facing the riverbanks and open beautiful views over the river and the harbor industry that looks spectacular in particular during night.
