MAUI HOTELS
Maui’s hotel and bed and breafast rates are higher than on the other islands, except Lanai’i. The benchmark for a 3-star hotel is $120-300 per night. 4-star hotels are around $200 – 500. Good and cheaper alternatives are self-catering rental apartments you can book over vrbo.com, vacationrentals.com or similar pages.

Areas like Kaanapali in the West or Wailea in the Southeast are featuring mainly overdeveloped high-end resorts. Many of those huge facilities also include apartments or condos that belong to private owners. If you are looking for a bargain in one of the resorts check pages like vrbo.com because the private owners mostly underprice the hotel rates.

The exact opposite to the overdeveloped resort towns is Hana. The town is located far off any touristy civilization and is dominated by small B&Bs besides two smaller luxury resorts. In the Upcountry or north of Kapalua you will find sparsely any accommodations except private home rentals. Kapalua itself is known for the Ritz Carlton Resorts and high-end apartment rentals.

In my opinion the best mix of seclusion and entertainment is offered in Lahaina. Looking into this area you will find some apartment rentals and small hotels circled by a Hawaiian picture-book setting. The accommodation lie adjacent to a lovely shopping and restaurant mile and they are all reasonable priced!

Maui Hotels - Lahaina (West Shore)

The former fishing village attracts visitors with its unique and quaint setting. A scenic coastline composed of white sandy beaches, curved palm trees, fisherboats and yachts is lining this picturesque little town. On top of that a promenade along the shore is offering a huge choice of shops, galleries, and restaurants that are located in historic buildings from the 19th and 20th century.

North of Lahaina follows Kaanapali a typical 4-star hotel ghetto with brands like Sheraton, Hilton, Westin, etc.
Except for the endless beach and the terrific snorkeling spot I wouldn’t stay here longer than a day. But if this area matches your expectations you will find more information about the accommodations under the resort link:

Outrigger Aina Nalu, 660 Wainee Street, Lahaina
http://www.outriggerainanalucondo.com/
$100–200 per night/apartment. This tropical oasis next to Front Street is the perfect midweek escape. Its amenities include two pools, plenty of lawn and garden and several BBQ areas. Most apartments are rented by private owners on pages like vrbo.com or vacationrentals.com. You have the choice between 1 and 2 Bedrooms that feature the same interior and only differ in accessories. Although the resort belongs to Outrigger Hotels it makes no sense renting rooms over them, since the private owners underprice their rates.
Lahaina Shores Resort, 475 Front Street, Lahaina
http://www.lahainashores.com/
$120–150 per night/apartment. The Lahaina Shores is the only beach hotel in the town. Staying here you have the choice between studios and 1 – 2 bedroom condos. The hotel is located at the southern end of Front Street next to a small shopping mall called “Shops at 505”. The mall offers few boutiques, galleries and a small night club.
Puamana Apartments, 272 Pualei Dr #3, Lahaina
http://puamanavacations.com
$200–500 per night/apartments. The Puamana is a private community that consists of several small houses. The community is situated at the southern skirts of Lahaina at Puamana Beach (about 1.2 miles/ 2km away from the center).
The owners are renting the units over vrbo.com or vacationrentals.com. The amenities include a large garden and pool that is overlooking the ocean.

Maui Hotels - Kapalua

The Nordwest is the home of the exclusive and quiet Kapalua Resort that is dominated by the Ritz Carlton Group. If you start thinking of another luxurious hotel ghetto you are far wrong. Instead the area contains fancy beach houses, villas and apartments that are either lining the golf courses or the small beach promenade.

South of Kapalua is Napili a town known for plenty 3-star accommodations that are lining the coastline up to Kaanapali. In its vicinity you have some restaurants and supermarkets but their location is lacking any charme. Contrary to other resort towns you do not have any promenade along the shore. Instead the shops and restaurants are hidden behind the hotels in ugly malls along the road.
Furthermore, the beaches are very narrow and the water quality is not overwhelming. Before you decide for an accommodation in this area I recommend taking a closer look at Kapalua and Lahaina.

Ritz Carlton Residences, 1 Bay Drive, Kapalua
http://kapaluabay.com/
$180–350 per night/apartment. Whether located at the fairways or within the hills atop the bay you have the choice between several apartment communities. Their prices differ in location, amenities and size. The further away you stay from the beach the cheaper the rate becomes. However, you will miss the view towards Molokai.
If you are interested in golfing consider an apartment whose owner offers special discounts at Kapalua Golf. Rentals are offered over. vrbo.com, homeaway.com, etc. If you can afford the luxury you should consider one of the Ritz Carlton’s beach villas at Kapalua Beach. Starting at a minimum of $1000 per night you are joining in. The villas are also available over vrbo.com.
Ritz Carlton Resort, 1 Ritz Carlton Drive, Kapalua
http://www.ritzcarlton.com/en/Properties/KapaluaMaui/Default.htm
$300-600 per night/room. The luxurious hotel is located above the cliff and the “Dragon’s Teeth” between Kapalua and Namalu Bay. Thanks to the hilly location of the complex you can oversee the ocean from the pool and most of the rooms. The beaches are only minutes away and along Kapalua Bay you can use a scenic promenade to walk to the Ritz Carlton Residences and the quaint Kapalua beach.
Kapalua Villas, Kapalua Drive, Kapalua
http://www.kapaluavillasmaui.com
$200-400 per night/condo. Although also a Kapalua accommodation the villas do not belong to the Ritz Carlton Group. Private owners are renting their vacation villas over vrbo.com and as usual their rates are lower than the ones listed on the resort page. The villas are available in different standards, amenities, and locations that set the rate.

Maui Hotels - Hana

Kailua-Kona is the center of tourism on Big Island with a long stretch of accommodations along Ali’i Drive down to Kailua Pier. Staying here you have a big choice of affordable hotels, motels and vacation rentals close to the shore but might lack some typical secluded Hawaiian atmosphere.

The Guesthouses at Malanai, Hana
http://www.hanaguesthouses.com
$225-275 per night/cottage. The B&B consists of two small cottages with fully equipped kitchens. It is located on an old plantation between Hana and Hamoa Beach. You are welcome to pick fruits for your breakfast in the garden. You have the choice between papayas, bananas, pomegranates, lychees and peaches. Sounds like paradise? Well it is located 3 miles south of Hana.
Ala’aina Ocean Vista, SR 184A, Hana
http://www.hanabedandbreakfast.com/
$175-185 per night. This B&B only has one room but this one is almost completely glazed to offer you a full view over the garden and coastline. The room comes with an open-air kitchen and is located on a banana plantation above the 7 Sacred Pools south of Hana. You either can spend the evenings on your private patio or share a wine with the friendly owners.

Maui Hotels - Wailea

Huge resorts that are lining the coastline are dominating Wailea. Nevertheless the area contains beautiful beaches and if you choose well you can experience a wonderful vacation in the South despite the masses. But be aware that this area is pricey.

Wailea Beach Villas, 3800 Wailea Alanui, Wailea Resort
http://www.drhmaui.com/wailea-beach-villas/maui-luxury-villas.php
From $550 per night/apartment. Luxurious apartment community that is located next to the Shops at Wailea. Private owners rent the fancy apartments over vrbo.com. Though pricey each apartment has enough space for several people lowering the costs if you split it. The smallest unit has 1,300 sqft (120qm) and comes with two bedrooms.
Hotel Wailea, 555 Kaukahi Street, Wailea
http://www.hotelwailea.com
$200–400 per night/room. The hotel is located atop the beach resorts. Due to its lifted location it offers marvelous views over the bay. The rate comes with a complimentary beach and shopping shuttle, WiFi, Kona coffee and cookies, and a private beach area with sunchairs, umbrellas, etc.
Wailea Elua Village, 3600 Wailea Alanui Drive, Wailea
http://www.eluavillage.org
$300–500 per apartment. The community offers several two-story houses and is located at the beginning of the beautiful Wailea Coastal Walk. It’s only a 10 minutes walk to the center of Wailea. The beach is on the opposite of the walkway.
This accommodation has the advantage that it is smaller than the other resorts and that it is located off the hectic. Although it is not as fancy as the Grand Hyatt you have less people, more privacy and lower rates! Good offers are available over vrbo.com or vacationrentals.com, etc.
